Use Agreement

At Sea Smoke Sauna your health and safety is our high priority. It's important to follow certain safety precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable sauna experience:

  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your sauna session. Saunas can cause excessive sweating, leading to dehydration if you're not properly hydrated.

  • Quiet, please: We are located in a peaceful setting, but we have neighbors nearby. Be respectful by keeping voices quiet and softly closing doors, and refrain from playing music. You might also notice that cell signal is limited at the sauna site. This might be an invitation to unplug. We advise that you do not bring your phone into the hot room, it’s just too darn hot for electronics!

  • Metal: You may want to remove any metal jewelry or wire-framed glasses that touch your skin. Metal heats up quickly in the sauna and can burn you. The stainless-steel water bucket and copper hearth may also get hot.

  • Limit your time: Start with a short respite in the heat, typically around 5 minutes, and gradually increase the duration as you become more accustomed to the temperature. Avoid staying in the sauna for prolonged periods. We provide a discreet clock in the changing room, if you desire to keep track of time. We will give you a 10 minute reminder before the end of your session. Please respond verbally.

  • Know your limits: Pay attention to your body's signals. If you start feeling lightheaded, dizzy, or unwell, exit the sauna immediately. Staying in the heat too long can be dangerous. Spend a few minutes in the heat, exit, and cool off in the changing room, outside, or with the cold water provided. This heating and cooling cycle is repeated several times throughout your session.

  • Find your bearings: Move slowly when entering the hot room and allow time for your eyes to adjust to the light. We use solar lighting under the benches, but the hot room is intentionally dark to create a certain atmosphere. Ambient light from the stove and from outside allow for safe movement. Watch your step, the copper hearth gets warm and can be slippery when wet. Use caution when navigating the tiered benches.

  • No alcohol and drugs: Saunas can intensify the effects of alcohol and certain drugs, leading to impaired judgment and increased risk of accidents. Avoid consuming any substances before your session. Use of any substances is prohibited on site and during sauna sessions.

  • Stove Use: Sea Smoke Sauna staff will stoke the stove before your session to maintain the perfect temperature range. Please do not open the stove, adjust the damper, add wood, or touch the stove at any time.

  • Open Floor: Our sauna floor is designed like a deck. You can pour water over yourself in the hot room, and it drains through the floor directly to the outside. Wet flooring may be slippery.

  • Dry or Steam: A dry or steam-bath allows for customizing your  sauna experience. Please use the wooden ladle provided to gently add water to the rocks on top of the stove for desired steam. Use caution when adding water to the sauna rocks. Add only a few ladlefuls at a time. Steam intensifies the heat and can cause burns.

  • Sauna temperature: Be aware of the sauna's temperature and limit your heat exposure according to your comfort. There is a thermometer on the wall in the hot room. High temperatures can cause overheating and other health risks. Temperature in the sauna will be maintained between 160°F and 200°F. Heat rises. Top bench is hottest; bottom bench for less heat.

  • Use a towel: We provide simple cotton towels. Sit or lie on a towel inside the sauna to protect your skin from direct contact with the hot surfaces. This can help prevent burns or discomfort. Please leave your towels in the changing room. We will gather used linens after your session.

  • Sauna clothing: Saunas are traditionally used while nude or with minimal clothing. As a cleanliness courtesy, we request that you always sit on a towel.

  • Doors: The exterior door to the changing room opens in, like a traditional exterior door. The hot room door opens out, to allow for occupants to exit the heat quickly and easily. Please do not block the sauna doors at any time. Close doors softly.

  • Medical conditions: If you have any underlying health conditions, such as heart problems, high blood pressure, or respiratory issues, it's important to consult with your doctor before using a sauna. Saunas can put extra strain on the cardiovascular system, and individuals with certain medical conditions may need to avoid or limit sauna use. Some medications may have contraindications with using a sauna.

  • Certain groups: Pregnant people, children, and the elderly may have a lower tolerance to heat and should use saunas with extreme caution and only after consulting a healthcare professional. All guests must be 18 years old.

It's always a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional if you have any concerns, specific health conditions, or contraindications with certain medications before using a sauna.
